Over 12,000 years ago, Cheltenham was an Anglo-Saxon village. In 1226 up to the 18th century, it transformed into a market town and became the centre of the economy.
Its medicinal waters, regarded as being beneficial for a wide range of illnesses, were discovered in the 18th century where the Cheltenham Ladies College now stands.
In 1716, the town became a health and holiday spa town resort. King George III spent five weeks at Cheltenham in 1788 to drink the waters for his health further sealed the popularity of the town. Its residents dramatically increased from 1,500 to over 3,000 between 1700 and 1800.
Cheltenham’s popularity as a spa town resort lasted from 1790 to 1840. These years saw the building of villas, crescents, and Regency terraces. This town became a rising residential town in 1840 when it also became famous for the quality preaching in its chapels and churches, as well its schools and colleges.
During the 20th century, Cheltenham has rapidly grown to become a centre for administration and business. The town became accessible through the A40 trunk road and the nearby M5.
The construction of the main railway and airport during the 20th century has likewise attracted major businesses to establish headquarter buildings in the town. These businesses included Dowty Aerospace, Chelsea Building Society, Eagle Star, Smiths aerospace, and the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service.
The spa waters in Cheltenham continue to flow today at Pittville Pump Room. The town is also famous for its horse racing festival, which began in 1902, as well as international literature, science, jazz, and music festivals.
These festivals have led Cheltenham to be referred to as the “most complete regency town in England”. Cheltenham also prides itself as one of the few English towns who have successfully blended contemporary and traditional architecture.
